Nokia E51 review


The Nokia E51 is a smart phone specially suited to the corporate traveler. Corporate oriented e-mail support includes Microsoft Exchange, Visto Mobile, and Seven Always-on, including POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP protocols. Instant messaging is provided utilizing Yahoo, AOL, OMA 1.2 and MSN. Connectivity support includes 3G, HSDPA, WLAN IEEE 802.11g, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, Micro USB and Infrared IrDA. Network communication is via GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA 850/2100.

Short-cut keys enable the traveler to quickly access functions. For example, there are keys to instantly display the e-mail inbox, calendar, phone book, voice recorder, and the home screen. The T9 Predictive Text key function enables quick, accurate entry of text. A LED indicator announces receipt of new e-mails and Flight Mode enables use of functions that do not generate radio signals.

Long distance phone costs can be saved by using the VoIP internet phone function. Other capabilities of interest to the corporate traveler include a PDF viewer, and ZIP Manager for managing large files. Microsoft 2000 and later Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents can be viewed. They can also be modified with the optional Nokia Quickoffice editor. Internet browsing is supported and can occur simultaneously with voice functions.

The integrated, multi-country map function can be especially helpful when traveling and optional voice guided navigation is available. Address locations, points of interest, and directions can be obtained. Alarm Clock, Calculator, and Voice Dial are provided. There is also a Measures and Currency Converter.

The 4.49 inch height, 1.81 inch width, 0.47 inch thick, 3.53 ounce candy bar form provides an easy to handle device. The 1.6 inch high, 1.2 inch wide, active matrix screen displays up to 16 million colors and has an ambient light sensor. Integrated memory is 160 megabytes, expandable to 4 gigabytes with a hot swappable microSD memory card.

The 2 mega pixel camera's 4x digital zoom function operates in both still and video modes. Video streaming and playback is provided, as is a self timer.

Music is provided by an integrated MP3 player and visual FM radio. The MP3 player includes a frequency equalizer and enables creation of play lists.

The rechargeable battery can be expected to provide an average of up to 4.4 hours of talk time, and 13 days of standby time.

This smart phone is definitely designed to provide the corporate traveler with many capabilities for keeping in touch with the office.
